Survivornomics – a Blend of Prospering and Preparedness

I do not believe that our sole purpose while on this planet is to survive. Life at every level is preprogrammed to thrive and though it sounds like a semantics debate, the two ways of looking at your time on our planet frame both how you look at life overall as well as your daily interactions. You can either hunker down or venture out. You can wait for the next shoe to drop or you can advance in the direction of your dreams. Either way, it is your choice.

That’s not to say that these terms or frames with which to view life are mutually exclusive. They’re actually more of a blend in a vibrant and healthy human mind; a little surviving, a lot more thriving. Your job is to figure out the percentage, to calculate your own survivornomics. In this day and age, confronted by economic, political and meteorological turmoil at nearly every turn, it’s easy to fall back and take a defensive position. Though I believe we are called to thrive, every so often we have to fall back on our survival instincts. Thankfully we possess an aptitude for both.

Clearly the human makeup is designed for more prospering than paranoia. That said, most of us wear seat-belts when we climb into our car or truck. We are not anticipating a crash, it’s just nice to have a backup. We buy health insurance not because we think we are dying, but on the off chance something does go awry, we’re not left alone to shoulder the medical costs. We teach our children to dial 9-1-1- hoping they’ll never call it. Most of us dive in seldom thinking twice about the lifeguard.

When you look at your life, what is your blend?

I like the percentage of 90/10. 90 percent blooming, 10 percent “better safe than sorry.” More pushing ahead, than falling back defending your position, more profiting than paralysis.

The best way to thrive is to have a survival plan as a foundation. A well thought-out and practiced plan leads you outside the grip of panic whenever  “it” hits the fan. The question I always ask is pretty straight forward. When you can’t call on anyone else, can you call on yourself? The second question I often ask, “Are you living your dreams?”
